i am a young parent living in newham and i use many of the sevices provided for young mums. i am going to express my thoughts and feelings on what would benifit me as a young mum.
i attend many of the young parents/teen parents groups in newham and i have done for just over two years now.i first started to attend these groups when i was pregnant. these groups offer help and support. and arrange groups lke .healthy eating .contracepton with one paticular group young parents meet up and get to know one another and share experances.
although there are many facilities for young parents i would like to see more oppertunites given to us. by this i mean things that we can not afford or fund ourselfs i.e family holidays, day trips prehaps help with funding our driving lessons. there seems to be many organistions in newham willing to help young parents but many of these organisatons are too simular to one another
when i have been out and about i have often heard people commenting on the fact that i look too young to be a mum. this dosn't paticualy bother me i just say to my self "narrow minded people" and when people are quick to judge me i think that says a hell of a lot more about them. there was this one time when i was on a bus. my baby was about 7 months old and he was crying. he was due a feed so there i was cooling his bottle and a lady sittng close by said "you cant give a baby a bottle every time it crys." I replied with "yes madam you are right my baby is in a very procist routine and as i am on a bus im a little lategiving him his feed" in a respectful tone. the shock on the womens face was a picture.
i have recentley started using oter activaties in other areas and i found thisvry interesting ecause i got to see how the children reacted and interracted with one another.
today i attended a fun day at cleeves primary school in e6 it was a realy fun day an everything was free including food. there were lots of activities i.e face paints mendi bouncy castle t-shirt printing and many information stools.
This project has just started to train teen parents in Newham to develop their own on line resources and will enable the group to make contacts, provide information for teenage parents in London and even globally.
The project is training teen parents to write and publish their stories/diaries/experiences and be journalists with their own blog pages which they can update and add to when ever and where ever they want.
If you would like to join the project contact Juliette Mills, office@ech.org.uk, 020 7538 4545/3388 or Angie Jasper at Choice 136 on 0207 511 4314 or just blog us.
Workshops take place every Tuesday afternoon at NEWTEC, 22 Deanery Road, Stratford, E15-4LP
From: 3pm – 5pm
Free Crèche provided by Early Start
